U.S. shoots down suspected Chinese language stumble on balloon off South Carolina cruise

Hello everyone I'm Janet shamley and thanks for joining us here on CBS News We are following breaking news this afternoon the U.S has shot down a suspected Chinese spy balloon off the coast of the Carolinas the Pentagon had been monitoring the balloon for days as it made its way across the country the Chinese government claims it's a.

Civilian weather balloon CBS News National Security correspondent David Martin has more the decision is intended to send a message to China obviously a one that the U.S will not tolerate invasions of its airspace but two it is intended to find out what China was trying to do with this incredibly Brazen intelligence.

Operation sending this balloon that they knew the U.S would be able to detect and track why would they send that balloon over the United States and the the hope is that by recovering debris down to the microprocessors that were used in that equipment the U.S will be able to get a good idea of what the Chinese were really up to and also it should be the.

Ultimate test of the Chinese claim that this was just a a weather balloon going to stray the operation appears to have been successfully completed but I think President Biden is going to have to answer questions about why this wasn't done before that balloon ever got into U.S airspace it came across the Northern Pacific over the Aleutian Islands then.

Over Canada then down into the lower 48. why wasn't it shot down then instead of after it it had basically a full week of flying over the U.S Gathering intelligence which presumably has already been transmitted back to China so whatever intelligence they collected has already been compromised and the Chinese have it so the operation to.

Shoot the balloon down is over the recover every operation of the payload is just beginning and I'm sure President Biden will just be be beginning to explain why he waited so long to do this David Martin thank you very much President Biden spoke about the mission to shoot down the balloon minutes after the Pentagon confirmed it he said he.

Ordered the Pentagon to undertake the operation when it was safe to do so I successfully took it down and I want to compliment our aviators who did it and we'll have more to report on this a little later I told them to shoot it down oh Wednesday on Wednesday but the recommendation they said to me let's wait till the safest place to do it.

Sharing is caring!
